The Chrysler Airflow parked with a sunset in the background.

Presented for the very first time at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in 2022, the electric SUV Chrysler Airflow Concept was envisioned to be the brand's first all-electric utility vehicle. When can we expect it to become available? And what does it have to offer?

Regarding the manufacturer's other hybrid SUVs, aside from the Aspen hybrid, which was available only as a 2009 model year, there are none. And in terms of hybrid vehicles in general, the manufacturer's only offering is the Pacifica minivan.

With the electrification era well underway, can we expect the manufacturer to produce more hybrid or electric vehicles in the near future? Here is everything we know about the Airflow and its possible arrival in dealerships.

Chrysler, Stellantis and Electrification

Stellantis is a large company housing 14 different car brands that are sold worldwide. These companies include Chrysler, of course, but also luxury and high-performance brands such as Maserati, Lancia and Alpha Romeo, among others.

Stellantis is deeply invested in the electrification era, with a mission to become not only a company focused on sustainable mobility but also one achieving zero emissions by 2038. This ambitious goal is set to have 100% of battery-powered vehicles on the European market and 50% in the United States.

To reach this target, 50 billion euros have been invested, dedicated to the creation of electric models. This includes product development and battery production. The company has also designed platforms on which to build its electric vehicles ‒ like the STLA small, medium and large‒ which are already used to build several very popular EVs. Other platforms also exist.

It is on the STLA medium platform that the Chrysler Airflow Concept was built.

Interior and Exterior Design of the Chrysler Airflow Concept

The Chrysler Airflow on a forest road.

Today's design of the Airflow is inspired by the Chrysler Airflow produced from 1934 to 1937, one of the first automobiles to use aerodynamic lines for the purpose of reducing wind resistance.

With a clearly futuristic silhouette, the lines of the Airflow Concept are equally sleek and aerodynamic. The SUV's stance is low and the roof slopes toward the rear, creating an exterior design directing the flow of air, hence its name.

The headlamps are tapered to the point where they are defined by the manufacturer as "lighting blades". The sculpted hood and overall design appear to have been carved by the wind. Every detail has been considered to maximize vehicle performance and the driving experience.

To maintain this very open design that gives the impression that the Airflow glides over the road almost like a bird in flight, the model is finished in an Arctic White exterior, coupled with light interior colours for an ethereal style.

If white isn't your thing, you'll be pleased to know that a Graphite version is offered, described as its "alter ego," for a more sophisticated look. The combination of a Galaxy Black exterior with Cyprus Copper accents around the window surrounds and rims is simply striking.

The interior of the concept featured a four-seat configuration, although for the production model a more traditional five-seat layout was expected. The on-board space is generous and airy, with a panoramic roof and futuristic accents throughout.

Numerous screens are available inside, including not only three screens at the front (one for the driver, one for the passenger and one for infotainment) but also screens to entertain rear passengers. Chrysler stated that these would come with a new interface enabling seamless updates, even remotely.

Ambient lighting allows both the driver and passengers to personalize their sanctuary, which is further enhanced by premium materials and comfortable seating. The chosen materials are considered to have low environmental impact, aligning with the environmental focus innate to electric vehicles.

The trunk appears to be as spacious as the rest of the interior, although the exact capacity has not been revealed.

Chrysler Airflow Concept: Specifications

The Airflow is poised to mark a step toward an electric future for the manufacturer. It goes without saying that power and performance levels will be up to par. While not all details are available yet, here are those we have so far.

Engine and Power

According to the manufacturer's website, the powertrain with which the Airflow Concept would be equipped combines two 150-kW motors, translating to 201 horsepower. These are coupled with a 118-kWh battery. The combined output would therefore reach 402 horsepower and 350 lb‑ft. of maximum torque.

You would also have access to all-wheel drive for smooth and dynamic performance.

Towing Capacity and Cargo Space

These figures are unknown. Although the Airflow Concept showcased a very spacious trunk, exact numbers have not been disclosed.

Charging Time and Range

We do not have the details regarding the charging time of the 118-kWh battery, but the manufacturer claims that the Airflow would offer an electric range of 600 km.

Compatibility with charging stations remains unknown as well.

Dimensions of the Chrysler Airflow Concept

The dimensions of the Airflow indicate that it would clearly be considered a luxury compact crossover. Below are the dimensions in table format:

Length 4,715 mm
Width 1,892 mm
Height 1,435 mm
Wheelbase 3,600 mm
Ride Height 140 mm

Chrysler Airflow Concept: First Model Year

The Chrysler Airflow parked for the night.

The initial model year for the Chrysler Airflow Concept was scheduled for late 2025 or 2026, with estimated prices between $50,000 and $60,000 US. Despite the success of the concept, Chrysler announced earlier this year that production efforts for an Airflow had been suspended until further notice.

The company's CEO, Chris Feuell, reportedly stated that a reassessment of the market and consumer needs was necessary before moving forward. It is therefore unclear when the Airflow will hit the market or if it will even be produced. Feuell confirmed that 2026 would mark the arrival of a brand new, more evolved Pacifica, as well as a new crossover and perhaps even a third model based on the Chrysler Halcyon Concept.

Conclusion

Even if the Chrysler Airflow concept never reaches production lines, it speaks volumes about what the manufacturer has in store for the future. It is clear that new products will debut in the coming years, focusing on luxury, refinement, performance, and interiors at the cutting-edge of technology.

Whether it's an Airflow, a Halcyon or any other model, the brand is expected to reinvent itself and produce models that will satisfy increasingly discerning drivers.

Even though the current offering is limited to minivans, it is evident that something is in the works behind the scenes, especially in light of Stellantis' very ambitious target.
