The RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150 are two full-size trucks with comparable performance. However, a few important factors set them apart. The RAM 1500 offers a 14.4-inch infotainment centre, the largest in the segment.
The RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150 are two full-size trucks with comparable performance. However, a few important factors set them apart.
In 2026, the RAM 1500 still offers the customization choices it is known for. In fact, it lists about a dozen different trims, while the Ford F-150 is limited to eight.
In practical terms, this means it is much easier to find a RAM 1500 trim that fits your budget perfectly.
Here is a quick overview of the different trims for each truck and their starting prices:
| RAM 1500 trims | Starting price (MSRP)* | F-150 trims | Starting price (MSRP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tradesman (4x4) | $55,790 | XL (4x2) | $53,735 |
| Express | $57,985 | STX | $59,330 |
| Black Express | $58,545 | XLT | $61,340 |
| Big Horn | $60,890 | Tremor | $84,925 |
| Warlock | $61,585 | Lariat | $85,190 |

While it is available with a higher starting price, it is important to note that every RAM 1500 in Canada includes four-wheel drive, whereas it is optional on the Ford F-150. For those who need a truck that can work and handle our province's weather, four-wheel drive is almost a must. In this case, the F-150 becomes more expensive than the RAM 1500 in their respective base trims.
To help you compare both trucks quickly, here is a summary of their powertrains:
| Powertrain | Maximum power (hp) | Maximum torque (lb-ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | 305 | 269 |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 395 | 410 |
| 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-6 | 420 | 469 |
| 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo high-output inline-6 | 540 | 521 |
| Powertrain | Maximum power (hp) | Maximum torque (lb-ft) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L EcoBoost V6 | 325 | 400 |
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 | 382 | 500 |
| 5.0L V8 | 400 | 410 |
| 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid V6 | 435 | 578 |
| 3.5L EcoBoost high-output V6 (Raptor) | 450 | 510 |
| 5.2L supercharged V8 (Raptor) | 720 | 640 |
Although the base 2.7L engine in the F-150 shows slightly higher performance than the 3.6L engine in the RAM 1500, the twin-turbo high-output Hurricane delivers performance that is hard to match. In fact, only the supercharged V8 surpasses it, and that one is offered solely on the Ford F-150 Raptor.
Finally, over the course of the year, the RAM 1500 is expected to introduce a RAM 1500 REV, an electric pickup with incredible performance.
With so many powertrains available, it can be hard to quickly compare the towing and payload numbers of these two trucks. Here is a summary:
| Powertrain | Towing capacity | Payload |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | 8,110 lb. | 2,370 lb. |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 | 10,170 lb. | 1,650 lb. |
| 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo inline-6 | 11,570 lb. | 1,980 lb. |
| 3.0L Hurricane twin-turbo high-output inline-6 | 9,920 lb. | 1,520 lb. |
| Powertrain | Towing capacity | Payload |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L EcoBoost V6 | 8,400 lb. | 1,775 lb. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost V6 | 13,500 lb. | 2,400 lb. |
| 5.0L V8 | 12,800 lb. | 2,235 lb. |
| 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid V6 | 11,600 lb. | 1,740 lb. |
| 3.5L EcoBoost high-output V6 (Raptor) | 8,200 lb. | 1,405 lb. |
| 5.2L supercharged V8 (Raptor) | 8,700 lb. | 1,410 lb. |
While the Ford F-150 posts higher maximum towing and maximum payload thanks to its 3.5L V6, it is important to note that the RAM 1500 is generally the best truck for payload. In fact, at this level, the Pentastar V6 surpasses all the F-150 powertrains except for the 3.5L V6, to which it is comparable. Also, despite the impressive output of the Raptor engines, their capacities are rather disappointing, which reinforces the RAM 1500 and its high-output Hurricane engine as the most powerful pickup.
Although the RAM 1500 and the Ford F-150 both show rugged, aggressive exteriors, the RAM 1500 is known as an extremely comfortable pickup. For example, the RAM 1500 Tungsten includes driver and front passenger seats with 24 power controls and a Klipsch sound system with 23 speakers, both of which are exclusive features in the segment.
Once again, the RAM 1500 stands out by offering a bit more. The 14.4-inch central screen, available on certain trims, surpasses the 12-inch screen found in the F-150. The RAM 1500 also offers a 10.25-inch interactive screen for the front passenger, another class-exclusive feature. This makes it easier than ever for the front passenger to assist with navigation and driving inside a RAM 1500. In 2026, both pickups offer available hands-free driver-assistance technologies, along with other functions such as parking assistance and emergency braking.
With so many configurations available for both trucks that allow for similar performance, it can be difficult to choose the right RAM or the right pickup. However, thanks to an interior with more on-board technologies and comfort-oriented equipment, as well as standard four-wheel drive, the RAM 1500 is, in our opinion, the better choice.
Here is a summary of the base model for each truck for comparison:
| Base model features | RAM 1500 | Ford F-150 |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price (MSRP) | $55,790 (4x4 model) | $53,735 (4x2 model) |
| Powertrain | 3.6L Pentastar V6 | 2.7L EcoBoost V6 |
| Power | 305 | 269 |
| Torque | 325 | 400 |
| Towing capacity | 8,110 lb. | 8,400 lb. |
| Payload | 2,370 lb. | 1,775 lb. |
